Bafana Bafana will face Egypt, Angola and Zimbabwe in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stages later this year.

Hugo Broos silenced the critics in last year’s AFCON instalment, knocking out tournament favourites Morocco en route to a third-place finish.

World rankings

Egypt is Africa’s second-highest nation on FIFA’s world rankings, sitting 33rd, between Serbia and Russia—Bafana Bafana is 57th.

Egypt aware of Bafana threat

Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan appears wary of Bafana’s potential, saying, “I would like to wish all the best of luck to all the teams that want to win the big competition. As the Egyptian team, we are proud because we have won seven times. Mohamed Salah, I am lucky as a coach to have him.

“We have a player among the best in the world. Egypt has great talent all the time like Omar Marmoush. I am very glad, as a coach, to have such talented players.

“Salah and Marmoush will be the positive elements for the Egypt team especially against South Africa. And Angola and Zimbabwe have also progressed a lot.”

Will Zwane be back in time?

Bafana icon Themba Zwane suffered an Achilles injury during the AFCON qualifiers in October but will be ready for the upcoming tournament.

“Themba Zwane is obviously an important player for not only Sundowns but for South African football,” said Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso.

“No pressure on his recovery at all, still time to go,

“It was a very strong and hard injury, quite severe, and on this situation, the pressure is even worse. He is recovering well according to the programme but still time to go for sure.”
