Pirates have made a decisive move regarding their star winger Saleng, putting an end to speculation about his future. The 26-year-old Bafana Bafana attacker has been absent from the Buccaneers’ line up for nearly three months, fuelling rumours about his potential exit.
Why has Saleng been side lined?
Reports suggest that Saleng’s absence stems from an unsuccessful overseas move and dissatisfaction with his current wages at Pirates. His last appearance for the club dates back to December 7, when the Buccaneers faced Al Ahly in a goalless draw at Orlando Stadium.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his club situation, Saleng remains active with the national team. Pirates have given him the green light to represent Bafana Bafana in their two-legged CHAN qualifier against Egypt. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, and he continues training with the squad ahead of the return fixture in Cairo on March 9.
Pirates trigger contract extension
With his contract initially set to expire in June 2025, Orlando Pirates have exercised their two-year extension option, according to FARPost. This means Saleng will remain with the club until at least 2027, preventing him from signing a pre-contract with any other team. Any club interested in acquiring him will now have to negotiate a transfer fee with Pirates.
Saleng joined Pirates from Free State Stars after dazzling performances in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. He spent the 2021/2022 season on loan at Moroka Swallows before officially beginning his Pirates tenure in the 2022/2023 campaign.
Will Saleng return to Pirates’ training?
While his contractual situation is now allegedly settled. It remains unclear whether Saleng will return to training with the Buccaneers after his Bafana Bafana duties. The agency representing him recently released a statement emphasizing the importance of resolving key employer-employee issues:
“The matter involves significant issues at the core of the employer-employee relationship that require resolution.”
Despite the ongoing situation, the agency assured that Saleng remains committed to addressing these concerns through legal and professional channels.
