Everything you need to know about the AKA murder investigation

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that six people have been arrested in connection with the murder of rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes popularly known as AKA and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.

Police confirmed the news during a briefing in Durban on Tuesday night. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest developments.

LATEST ON THE AKA AND TIBZ MURDER INVESTIGATION

As previously reported by The South African, AKA and Tibz Motsoane were gunned down on 10 February 2022 outside Wish Restaurant on Florida Road in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Despite many speculations and interest even from outside South Africa, prior to the briefing, police insisted that the AKA and Tibz murder case was a complex one, and there were tonnes of evidential information that needed to be analysed and processed.

On Tuesday, police confirmed that six suspects have been arrested. These include a coordinator, two shooters, two spotters and the organiser of firearms and vehicles.

HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR:

  • The first spotter followed AKA from the King Shaka International Airport on arrival and on his way to the hotel. He also followed him to Wish restaurant.
  • The individual mentioned above was also responsible for gathering the resources and hiring the others to execute the murder.
  • The second spotter was outside Wish and is also linked to other murder cases.
  • Two of the suspects were arrested in Eswatini where they were hiding while four were arrested in South Africa.
  • Police said four vehicles, a firearm and cartridges found on the murder scene were linked to other cases.
  • The first vehicle, a Mercedes Benz was recovered on 6 March 2022.
  • Police recovered the gun to used to murder AKA on 22 April 2022.
  • AKA was the main target. The plan was to shoot him in his car however he took too long greeting Motsoane outside Wish
  • SAPS cannot confirm whether the organiser who is currently in custody was instructed by someone else to murder AKA.
