Zahara’s name dragged into DJ Sbu’s MoFaya vs Prime drink debate
Zahara’s name was dragged into the energy drinks debate about DJ Sbu’s MoFaya and Logan Paul’s Prime drinks when the latter sold out in SA.
It has become a well-known phenomenon on the Twitter streets that when broadcaster and businessman DJ Sbu trends, Zahara’s name will also feature on the trends list.
This was the case on Monday, 1 May, when the highly-anticipated energy drink, Prime, hit South African shelves and sold out at some Checkers retailers.

PRIME ENERGY DRINK VS MOFAYA
The American-manufactured hydration drink — which is owned and endorsed by YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI — gained cult-esque status among Gen Zers (or Ama2000) when it was launched last year.
Upon videos and pictures of South Africans queuing to buy Prime energy drink, some netizens pit the drink against DJ Sbu’s energy drink, MoFaya.
The question on some social media users’ minds was why a US energy drink is flying off the shelves, whilst a home-made drink isn’t.
The radio personality and his business partners founded MoFaya in 2015 with the aim to create a “strong, authentically African-inspired non-alcoholic beverage brand”.

FANS DRAG ZAHARA’S ROYALTIES BATTLE WITH DJ SBU INTO MOFAYA POPULARITY
To answer the burning question on some tweeps’ minds, some tweeps attributed the lack of support for DJ Sbu to his years-long royalties battle with songstress Zahara. In fact, all of the DJ’s “misfortunes” are often associated with the royalties issue.
The Loliwe hitmaker and the DJ have not been on good terms for years and it all started when Zahara accused DJ Sbu and Thembinkosi “TK” Nciza (who were her record label executives at her former label, TS Records) of exploiting her.
In 2019, Zahara claimed she did not receive royalties from her former bosses for her debut album Loliwe. The album sold over 500 000 copies and won Zahara several awards.

However, according to DJ Sbu, this is not the case. In July last year, he attempted to clear his name when he took to Twitter to write: “Ms Zahara’s money has always gone to her.”
In response, the Mgodi singer rubbished his claims and called him a liar.
“I haven’t been getting anything since I left the record label and I saw recently that my music was uploaded on digital platforms without me knowing, it means they sold my records to somebody and it means I need to get a cut for it.”

DJ Sbu and Zahara’s feud has been ongoing, with each party claiming the other is not being truthful. Speaking to TshisaLive last year, the Remember When It Rained hitmaker fired back at Zahara saying he “built” himself from “nothing”.
“I’ve never sought an opportunity to benefit from someone or try take somebody else’s money,” he added.
During Zahara’s hardship last year when she was on the brink of losing her townhouse in Roodeport, she again blamed her financial challenges on her former record label bosses.
And in this royalties war, tweeps have always been on Zahara’s side.
