Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis conveyed the City’s condolences following the passing of Athol Fugard, esteemed playwright, novelist, actor, and director, on Saturday at the age of 92.

Fugard, a recipient of the city’s Civic Honours, was renowned for his profound contributions to theatre and his unwavering opposition to apartheid.

‘Luminary in the world of theatre’

‘Athol Fugard was not just a luminary in the world of theatre; he was a teller of profound stories of hope and resilience about South Africa. His narratives, deeply rooted in our nation’s struggles and triumphs, have left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape. Through his works, Fugard illuminated the path to justice and equality. Cape Town mourns the loss of a true patriot whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.

‘As our city reflects on Fugard’s monumental legacy, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his artistry,’ said Hill-Lewis.

Athol Fugard’s connection to Cape Town was both personal and professional.

He attended the University of Cape Town, where he initially pursued studies in Philosophy and Anthropology before dedicating himself entirely to the arts.

In 2010, his legacy was honoured with the opening of The Fugard Theatre in the historic District Six.

Throughout his illustrious career, Fugard received numerous accolades, including Civic Honours from the City of Cape Town in 2023, and the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver from the South African government in 2005, recognising his exceptional contributions to theatre.

Beyond his literary achievements, Fugard’s commitment to justice and equality made him a pivotal figure in South Africa’s cultural and political spheres.
