Several countries worldwide offer financial incentives to attract new residents to boost local economies and revitalise underpopulated areas.

For example, Ireland’s Our Living Islands program provides grants for those willing to move to its remote coastal islands, while Mauritius rewards entrepreneurs for launching businesses.

Some countries have also introduced schemes offering cash or tax breaks to encourage people to settle in rural villages or small towns.

These programs often come with requirements like investing in property, starting a business, or meeting residency criteria. However, for those seeking a fresh start, they offer a unique blend of adventure and opportunity.

If you’re looking for a change of scenery, these countries will pay you to move there.

Ireland

In 2023, Ireland introduced the Our Living Islands policy to encourage the repopulation of 30 coastal islands facing dwindling numbers.

Collectively, these islands are home to about 3,000 people, with one, Inis Bó Finne, having only two permanent residents.

Prospective residents should be aware that many of the islands are isolated from the mainland by daily tides, with no bridges or causeways connecting them. Access is limited to sea or air travel.

For those up for the adventure, Ireland offers up to €84,000 (around R1,622,728) to help cover the cost of reviving a derelict property built before 1993.

While you’ll still need to navigate the country’s immigration process, the financial incentive might make the transition a little easier.

Chile

Chile offers funding to startup companies who wish to start their journey in the South American nation.

According to Afar, Since 2010, the Start-Up Chile accelerator program has been offering equity-free grants to support startups at various stages of development.

The program includes a four-month initiative providing 15 million Chilean pesos (around R293,550) for early-stage entrepreneurs, while more advanced startups can receive up to 75 million Chilean pesos (about R 1,470,000) along with a one-year work visa.

Companies with women in leadership roles are also eligible for a larger share of the funding.

Greece

Despite its breathtaking islands, ancient ruins, and Mediterranean climate, Greece is facing a population decline.

According to Travel Noire, the country has implemented a range of initiatives to draw in new residents. These efforts vary, but some Greek islands have offered incentives such as financial support, free housing, or land to encourage relocation.

The island of Antikythera provides families with three or more children free housing, food, and a monthly stipend of $542 (R9,930) to help them settle.

MAURITIUS

Located east of Madagascar, Mauritius is an emerging hub for entrepreneurs.

The island nation encourages new businesses by offering a reward of 20,000 Mauritian Rupees (around R7,942) to those willing to set up shop.

According to Business Day NG, to qualify, applicants must submit an innovative and profitable business proposal for committee approval.

While the financial incentive may seem modest, Mauritius boasts several other perks that make it an attractive destination.

These include excellent schools, a strong economy, beautiful year-round weather, and free healthcare for residents. Known for its cosmopolitan community, the island also welcomes expatriates from around the globe, adding to its vibrant and diverse culture.

SPAIN

This country is for wine and history enthusiasts.

According to USA Today, the remote Spanish region of Extremadura launched a program in August last year, offering up to €15,000 (around R289,650) to 200 eligible digital nomads working in tech.

To qualify, participants must move to one of Extremadura’s rural villages for at least two years.

The grants are designed to help ease the relocation process, covering expenses like securing accommodations and settling into their new community.

FRESH START IN COUNTRIES THAT WILL PAY

Whether you’re an entrepreneur seeking a new business hub or someone dreaming of a fresh start in a corner of the world, these programs offer more than just financial incentives. They provide the chance to become part of a new community and lifestyle.

While each destination comes with its own set of requirements and challenges, the promise of adventure, opportunity, and support makes the prospect of relocating exciting.

If you could move to a country that will pay you, where would you go?
