Nestled in a valley surrounded by rugged Karoo mountains, Nieu-Bethesda is best known for the hauntingly beautiful Owl House, the former home of artist Helen Martins.

This otherworldly sculpture-filled house attracts art lovers from all over. The quirky small town, with its unpaved streets and slow-paced lifestyle, is also home to craft breweries, local artists, and charming guesthouses. A visit to the fossil-rich Ganora Farm adds to the town’s unique appeal.

2. Prince Albert: A foodie’s delight

This picturesque Karoo town at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains is a must-visit for food and history enthusiasts. Prince Albert is famous for its well-preserved Cape Dutch architecture, as well as its award-winning olives and locally produced cheeses.

A must-do is a scenic drive through the Swartberg Pass, a breathtaking mountain route leading to the Cango Caves. Don’t miss a visit to one of the town’s excellent farm-to-table restaurants or the local dairy for fresh dairy delights.

3. Matjiesfontein: A step back in time

With its quirky museum, vintage red London bus tours, and fascinating Anglo-Boer War history, Matjiesfontein offers a truly unique experience. Enjoy a drink at the old-fashioned Laird’s Arms Pub and listen to tales of the town’s many ghost stories.

4. Willowmore: A gateway to the Baviaanskloof
