Popular South African restaurant Mugg & Bean has been given a tongue-lashing by social media users after a screenshot of a waiter’s dismal payslip went viral.

However, the eatery claims that the employees’ allegations of earning less than R2 000 per month are only “half-truths. “

According to authorities, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Nomakhosazana Meth, will announce an increase in the national minimum wage in February. The figure will take effect from 1 March 2025.

MUGG & BEAN DRAGGED OVER WAITER’S PAYSLIP

A screenshot of an anonymous Mugg & Bean waiter’s payslip went viral on social media. The post first appeared on Facebook, where the employee claimed that they had received a pittance from the restaurant.

According to the payslip – reportedly for December – the waiter took home less than R1500 after an almost R3000 deduction.

Entertainment blogger Phil Mphela called out the company, stating that he was “disappointed” in the salaries paid to their waiters.

“This has to change,” he tweeted.

OFFICIAL RESPONSE: ‘ALLEGATION IS A HALF-TRUTH’

Phil Mphela’s tweet attracted the attention of Mugg & Bean, who claimed that the public had been deceived.

According to the restaurant, they pay their employees according to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

It responded in a tweet: “. This allegation is half-truth without the full facts as a UIF deduction & salary advance was made to support the employee for the holidays. The balance [was] paid at month end per payroll schedule”.

NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE

According to the legislature, the current national minimum wage stands at R27.58 an hour.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) Commission has made its annual proposal to increase the figure by analysing the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation. The committee is hoping to raise the wage to R28.79 per hour. For a full-time worker, this equates to a monthly income of R5 182.20 from last year’s R4 412,80.
