Police in the Garden Route District continue to make headway in the fight to eradicate substance abuse and curb the proliferation of unlicensed firearms with the confiscation of drugs and firearms.

On Monday, 24 March, a 31-year-old accused made his first court appearance in the Ladismith Magistrates’ Court following his arrest when he was found with drugs with an estimated street value of R120 000 over the past weekend.

Consignment of drugs

Ladismith police members responded to information about a consignment of drugs which were en route from Oudtshoorn.

The team intercepted the man when he crossed an open field, searched him and found drugs in his possession.

Police confiscated 299 mandrax tablets, 417 bankies Tik and 263.85g of Tik.

He is facing a charge of dealing in drugs.

The accused was remanded in custody.

Disposed of in a dam

Meanwhile, in an unrelated matter, Dysselsdorp police members operationalised information of an unlicensed firearm which was disposed of in a dam when they dispatched police divers to the area where the members proceeded with a search.

A pistol without a serial number and five rounds of ammunition was retrieved from the dam.

The origin of the firearm is under investigation.

Ongoing operations

Furthermore, Knysna police members confiscated a pistol found inside a vehicle at a vehicle check point at Main Street, Knysna on Friday, 21 March.

The owner of the firearm was later traced and he faces a charge related to the contravention of the Firearms Control Act.

These efforts forms part of ongoing police operations to safeguard communities.
