Car hijackings continue to plague South Africa, with criminals targeting specific vehicles due to their high demand, resale value, and parts.

Staying informed and taking preventive measures can help reduce the risk.

Most hijacked cars in South Africa (2025 Update)

According to BusinessTech, vehicle hijackings in South Africa are often driven by the demand for specific makes and models.

In 2025, the following 9 vehicles have been identified as the most hijacked:

  1. VW Polo
  2. Toyota Hilux
  3. Ford Ranger
  4. Toyota Corolla Cross
  5. Toyota Fortuner
  6. Haval Jolion
  7. Chery Tiggo 4 Pro
  8. Haval H6
  9. Chery Tiggo 7 Pro

According to TimesLive, while vehicle hijackings and thefts occur at similar rates nationwide, regional patterns highlight specific areas with higher risks.

Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal: Theft occurs more often than hijacking, accounting for 52% and 61% of vehicle crimes, respectively.

Criminals in these provinces tend to steal parked vehicles rather than resorting to hijacking.

Western Cape: Hijackings happen twice as often as thefts, making it one of the most dangerous provinces for vehicle owners.

Eastern Cape: Hijackings are four times more likely than thefts, with criminals frequently targeting drivers on the road.

Business-Owned Vehicles: These vehicles face a 33% higher risk of hijacking than personal vehicles and are 56% more likely to be targeted for vehicle-related crime.

Criminals often target delivery vehicles and company-owned fleets due to their high resale value and ease of disposal.

How to Protect Your Vehicle

To reduce the risk of hijacking, CarTrack suggests the following tips:

  • Install a Vehicle Tracking System: A GPS tracker helps authorities locate your car in real time if hijacked.
  • Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Remain vigilant while driving, especially in high-risk areas. Minimise distractions and stay alert.
  • Park in Safe, Well-Lit Areas: Use secure parking facilities or garages whenever possible.
  • Avoid High-Risk Zones: Stay away from areas known for high crime, particularly at night.
  • Use Anti-Hijacking Devices: Immobilisers or steering wheel locks can make it harder for criminals to steal your car.

What to Do If You Are Hijacked

If you ever find yourself in a hijacking situation, follow these immediate steps to stay safe:

  • Stay Calm and Compliant: Do not resist or make sudden movements that may provoke the hijackers.
  • Exit the Vehicle Safely: If ordered to leave the car, do so slowly with your hands visible.
  • Avoid Eye Contact: Direct eye contact may be perceived as a threat.
  • Remember Details: Try to memorise details about the hijackers, such as their appearance and the direction they took.
  • Report Immediately: Contact the police as soon as possible and provide all necessary details.
