ENERGY SAVING TIPS

Here are some energy-saving tips you can use to reduce high electricity bill:

1. SWITCH TO ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHTING

  • Use CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps): CFLs use less energy and provide more light. They do this by converting electrical energy into light more efficiently than traditional incandescent bulbs. They also have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs.
  • LEDs (light-emitting diodes): LED lights have a light source that uses a mix of red, green and blue to produce white light. Like CFLs, LEDs also have a long lifespan.

2. OPTIMISE GEYSER USE

  • Use cold water instead of hot water from the geyser when doing quick tasks such as washing hands, brushing teeth or rinsing vegetables.
  • Install your geyser closer to where you use mostly hot water and make sure that you have basin plugs in the kitchen and bathroom to avoid letting hot water run excessively.

3. MAINTAIN YOUR SWIMMING POOL

  • If you have a swimming pool, it is essential to maintain a four to six-hour filtering cycle every day in winter and a two to six-hour filtering cycle every day in summer.
  • Clean your pool filters regularly for better water flow.

4. WASH LAUNDRY SMARTLY

  • When using a washing machine, it is advisable to wait for a full load of laundry instead of washing small quantities. This helps reduce electricity usage, thus saving you from paying high electricity bills.
  • If you have a tumble dryer, avoid using it in summer and use the washing line instead, as clothes easily dry in the sun.

5. USE A KETTLE INSTEAD OF A STOVE

  • Avoid using your stove for small tasks such as boiling water; instead, use a kettle.

6. DEFROST FOOD NATURALLY

  • If you have frozen food that needs to be defrosted, refrain from using the microwave. For example, if you plan to cook chicken curry and your chicken is frozen, wake up early, take the chicken out of the freezer and place it in the sink to defrost so that it will be easier for you to cook it in the evening.
