UMLALAZI RESIDENT DIES

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila confirmed to the SABC on Friday, 14 March that the death toll in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to two.

“Unfortunately, there was an incident that took place yesterday in Ward 6 under the Umlalazi municipality”, says Mzila.

This comes after a Pinetown woman in her fifties died after her vehicle was swept off a bridge by floods in Durban this week.

It is believed the woman was swept away on her way home from work on Thursday evening on Sarnia Road in Pinetown, Durban during the torrential downpours.

Advanced Life Support paramedics’ spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirms that her vehicle was found just off Gordon Road around 2 to 3 this morning,14 March.

Jamieson also reveals that they expect more rains, and advised people to stay home as many roads remain waterlogged and are strewn with debris.

FLOODS: MORE RAINFALL EXPECTED IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster Ayanda Nsele reveals to ECR that there’s a 60% chance of rain expected in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday and Sunday.

“That will be over Ugu, eThekwini, Ilembe and parts of King Cetshwayo. We do not have any warnings for the interior of the province,” says Nsele.

“We do not have an alert for Sunday, and we are expecting the rains to clear from late morning to the afternoon,” adds Nsele

KZN residents are also advised to take safety precautions as more rainfall is expected on Friday afternoon and evening.

Eskom is also attending to power outages in numerous areas after infrastrusrure was severely damaged by the storms.

SOUTH AFRICANS REACT TO FLOODING IN THE PROVINCE

@MrNoBdddyy: “Pray for KZN, Durban. The rain is still continuing to rain, while other residents are still trying to fix the damage from April 2022 floods.”

@ZiieRadebe: “Praying for my people here in eThekwini and other parts of KZN who are affected by these floods.”

@Ceeya_Mav: “We have survived so many KZN floods we have even stopped counting. We no longer even mark ourselves as safe anymore because they happen every 2 weeks.”

@Ncediso09: “What’s happening in KZN is heartbreaking. I remember last year when politicians came after the floods, promising millions, but many people didn’t see a single cent.”
