WATCH: Alleged racist clash outside Danie Malan in Pretoria
A parent alleged that a staff member told them that Laerskool Danie Malan is not for black people but used the “k word” instead.
Groups of parents clashed outside the Laerskool Danie Malan in Pretoria North, Gauteng, on the first day of the academic year.
Black parents alleged that their children are being systematically excluded as over 1000 learners are yet to be placed in Gauteng schools despite some starting on Wednesday, 11 January.

The online applications opened on 22 July 2022 and closed on 19 August 2022, however, in late December, the Gauteng Department of Education said it will allow late applications. It added that parents will be able to apply online and immediately upload documents online. Documents not uploaded may be hand delivered to schools from 11 – 31 January 2023.
Speaking to the SABC outside the school, a parent said she applied online and in time with the necessary paperwork for her child to start Grade 1 at the school. However, her child has not been placed.
The woman also alleged that when they visited the school on Monday, 9 January, a staff member told them as parents that Danie Malan is not meant for “the K word”.
“We are not being heard; the only system is not working,” she said.
The disgruntled parent said she would fight like others so their children could be placed within the feeder zone where they applied.
“We applied; give us space. How do you have one English class for each grade? It doesn’t make sense,” she said.
Police were deployed to curb as the situation as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was also part of the protesting parents.
