Parliament fire: ActionSA takes swipe at ANC over ‘act of arson’
ActionSA has condemned the Parliament fire as an ‘act of arson’ and joined others in taking a swipe at the ANC.
Herman Mashaba’s ActionSA has weighed in on the drama surrounding the fire at Parliament on Sunday. While the blaze seemingly continues to ravage the historical buildings, Vytjie Mentor ActionSA Western Cape Provincial Chairperson has condemned the incident.
Parliament fire ‘appalling’
In a statement issued by Mentor on the incident, the party described the blaze as a ‘severe security failure’.
“ActionSA is appalled by the act of arson that has devastated our country’s parliament, along with what must be regarded to be a severe security failure.”

Certainly, the political party insists that all indications point to the tragedy as ‘no accident’.
“With confirmation of the arrest of a suspect it is clear that this was no accident, and it becomes difficult to view this tragedy in isolation with the tabling of the State Capture Commission of Enquiry Report next week or the unrest witnessed in July last year.”

Parliament systems once again questioned
ActionSA joined scores of political heavyweights in questioning the systems in place.
“In addition to this act of criminality, serious questions have to be asked about the security and fire systems in our parliament. South Africa’s parliament is a vital symbol in our constitutional democracy. It was intended to be a sacred place where law-makers represent the will of the South African people and hold the President and his cabinet to account.”

Fire labelled as ‘arson’
Furthermore, Mentor highlighted ActionSA’s view that the incident was nothing short of arson.
“This act of arson that has wreaked havoc in this essential national key point cannot be reduced to another fire, but an act committed against the South African people.”

In conclusion, the party called for law enforcement to ensure a swift conclusion to the probe into the incident.
“ActionSA’s primary focus will be to ensure that law enforcement agencies conduct their investigations rapidly and without political interference, especially if this is found to be another consequence of ANC factional fights.”
