South Africa’s Municipalities Are in Crisis

Every day, millions of South Africans grapple with the effects of local government failure. Roads are in disrepair, water systems are unreliable, and power outages disrupt daily life. The consequences are clear: poor governance is causing suffering in communities, while mismanagement and corruption continue to erode essential services.

Service delivery has become a distant dream for far too many, especially in ANC-run municipalities, where the lack of basic services like water, waste removal, and power reduction schemes is commonplace. In some areas, like Ekurhuleni, residents have experienced frequent water disruptions. Similarly, Eskom’s failure to manage load shedding has left communities in darkness for hours on end. For South Africans, this isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a crisis that demands immediate action.

Where the DA Governs, Services Work

In contrast, DA-led municipalities show that effective governance can make all the difference. Take the DA-run City of Cape Town, for instance, where residents benefit from stable water supply systems and reliable waste removal that has been earmarked as the blueprint for all municipalities across South Africa to follow. The DA-run Kouga municipality is currently recognised as the greenest municipality in South Africa for 2024, with impressive infrastructure improvements and consistent service delivery.

The DA’s track-record of good governance shows that when leaders put people first, communities thrive. Roads are fixed, water is consistently supplied, and residents are treated with respect.

The ANC Has Broken Our Municipalities, But the DA Can Rescue Them

The DA is committed to fixing this crisis. We are looking for strong, ethical leaders who understand the challenges facing municipalities and have the will to transform them. These leaders will bring an end to the mismanagement that has crippled local government, restoring dignity and hope to communities.
