Sbusiso Lawrence Ntaka, the teacher who confessed to murdering his girlfriend Nontobeko Cele and went on to post her dead body had tried to kill her before.

Ntaka, who was a teacher at Ziphozethu Primary School in Stanger, stabbed Cele to death and later reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree.

KwaZulu-Natal police said Ntaka’s body was found at Malangeni area in Umzinto, a short distance from where he killed Cele whose bloodied body was found with several stab wounds and a broken knife next to it.

SBUSISO LAWRENCE NTAKA DESCRIBED AS ABUSIVE

As previously reported, police said reports indicate that Ntaka fetched Cele, who was his girlfriend, from her home and it is suspected that the two had a domestic related altercation which escalated to the murder.

“The suspect’s vehicle was found abandoned down the road from where the woman’s body was found, and blood on the front passenger seat suggested that the suspect killed the woman inside his vehicle,” KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.

A family member told Newzroom Afrika that Ntaka had called the family to inform them that he had murdered Cele and told them where her body was.

“I didn’t believe what I was told and I called Ntobe (Cele). Her phone was ringing but went unanswered, eventually, it went to voicemail,” she explained.

The family member said Ntaka tried to kill Cele before as she ran her over with a car and later assisted her with claiming from the Road Accident Fund (RAF).

“In May this year, Sbu ran Nontobeko over with a car. We thought Ntobe had died. We think it was on purpose, however, at the time we dismissed it and thought it was just a mistake.

“They had a violent relationship but we didn’t pay much attention to it. After the accident, Ntobe admitted that Sbu was violent and abusive towards her,” she said.

The aunt said the two had already broken up and Ntaka lied about the fact that Cele’s child was not his because he was jealous that Cele had moved on with her life.

NTAKA FAMILY SAYS THEIR SON SHOWED NO SIGNS OF VIOLENCE

Meanwhile, Ntaka’s father told the TV news channel that they were very disturbed by Sbusiso’s actions because, as a family, they knew that his son and Cele were no longer together.

Sipho Ntaka said his son had paid lobola for Cele; however, because of the many issues they had in their relationship, Cele dumped Ntaka.

“They had many issues in their relationship, and eventually, Sbu opened up and told us that even the child is not his. He said he never told us his issues because he loved his wife so much and didn’t want to disappoint us because we also loved her. He was hopeful that they would be able to resolve their marital issues.

“My son was extremely shy; however, when he was drunk, he would be confident enough to say whatever he wanted to say. He was also well-known that he was not violent; even our neighbours and his friends can attest,” he said.

Sipho said before he committed suicide, he gave away his car and many other things to family members.

POLICE MINISTER CONDEMNS BRUTAL MURDER

Meanwhile, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu condemned Ntaka’s actions saying the incident is a grim reminder of the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence in our society.

Mchunu said such acts of violence are a betrayal of shared humanity and have no place in our nation. Furthermore, the use of social media to amplify such cruelty is utterly unacceptable and reflects a disregard for basic decency and the dignity of others.

“The act of this individual having taken his own life ends the immediate legal pursuit of justice, but it does not diminish the severity of his actions or the pain inflicted on the victim, the victim’s family, friends, and community, including his own family,” Mchunu said.
