Shock over death of SA’s first black nuclear scientist Senamile Masango
The science community and the South African government have expressed shock over nuclear scientist Senamile Masango’s sudden death.

Senamile Masango, South Africa’s first black nuclear scientist, suddenly passed away this weekend.
Masango was a celebrated scientist who hailed from Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has paid tribute to the late trailblazer in a statement issued on 9 February 2025.
SENAMILE MASANGO PASSES AWAY
The department detailed Masango’s many achievements and the indelible mark the inspirational scientist left in her field and on those around her.
“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Senamile Masango, a trailblazing nuclear scientist who left an indelible mark on South Africa’s scientific community.
“As the country’s first black nuclear scientist, Masango’s remarkable achievements paved the way for future generations of scientists and inspired countless young minds,” it said.
SENAMILE MASANGO ADVOCATED FOR THE DISADVANTAGED
The statement also notes the impact Masango’s incredible efforts have had on the disadvantaged. The late nuclear scientist also founded Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).
“Masango’s tireless efforts to promote science education and empowerment, particularly among women and disadvantaged communities, will be deeply missed.
“Her advocacy for increased representation and opportunities for women in STEM fields have had a lasting impact.”
FAREWELL TO AN ‘EXTRAORDINARY INDIVIDUAL’
The department also extended their condolences to late Senamile Masango’s family. They also mentioned the Nongoma community in their tribute.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Masango family, who have lost a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. May you find strength and solace in the knowledge that her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift others.
“To the Nongoma community, we offer our sympathies for the loss of a shining star who brought pride and recognition to your community. May her memory continue to inspire and motivate future generations.
“As we bid farewell to this extraordinary individual, we honor her memory by continuing to strive for excellence, equality, and empowerment in the scientific community and beyond. Rest in peace, Senamile Masango. Your legacy will never be forgotten,” it concluded.
