WOMAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH WYNBERG MAGISTRATE’S COURT MURDER

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape said its Serious Violent Crime Detectives have been hard at work. As the team of investigators continues with the probe more arrests are imminent.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the investigation commenced after the brazen shooting incident on Tuesday, 8 April and since the shooting incident, investigators have worked around the clock in search of the perpetrators.

“Western Cape SAPS management has welcomed the breakthrough and expressed confidence in the team of investigators as the investigation unfolds. It is expected that the investigation will determine the motive for the murder,” Potelwa said.

The 50-year-old man was reportedly sought for murder.

SECURITY BEEFED UP AFTER INCIDENT

Following the incident, the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court was closed and a high-level delegation from the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development conducted an oversight.

As part of immediate interventions, the Department’s director-general advocate Doc Mashabane directed the installation of a security scanner, tightening access control to prosecutors’ and magistrates’ offices, and the enhanced vetting of court officials.

The shooting sparked outrage, raising questions about people’s safety inside court buildings, especially because some witnesses have been gunned down inside court premises in recent years.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) also condemned the brazen assassination carried out inside the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court building.

The party said the attack is yet another reminder of the pervasive and escalating gang violence terrorising communities across the Cape Flats.

“The fact that a war between gangs and taxi bosses can spill into the very building tasked with prosecuting these crimes poses serious questions about public safety – both inside and outside the courtroom,” the party’s spokesperson on Justice and Constitutional Development Glynnis Breytenbach said.
