Tries by Donovan Don and David Brits either side of half-time secured a nervy 10-7 Blitzboks win over hosts Australia in their final game on day one of the Perth Sevens.

Donovan Don opened the scoring after a good spell of possession for South Africa, unfortunately the conversion was off target.

Australia counter-punched when James Turner capitalised on a Blitzbok error to score a breakaway try to give the hosts a slender 7-5 lead going into the break.

The Blitzboks battled to get possession in the second half, but sturdy defence meant they successfully managed to keep Australia’s attack at bay. And ultimately, that relentless defensive pressure is what earned them the match-winning score.

With the Aussies pinned in their own half, the Blitzboks’ spot tackling saw Maurice Longbottom lose the ball forward and Brits was right there to pounce and score with an outstretched hand to clinch the game.

The Blitzboks return to action on Saturday morning at 7:50 when they take Argentina in their third and final pool match of the tournament.
