The First X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer Is an All-Star Evil Team-Up

Apocalypse, wow.

Anyone familiar with the seminal Marvel comic run Age of Apocalypse knows what to expect from the latest X-Men movie. Heck, anyone familiar with the Book of Revelation does, too. Ancient guy with four super-powered attendants comes riding in to ruin everybody's lunch. Now, though, the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse shows us just how Bryan Singer's latest cinematic superhero extravaganza has adapted the story for the screen.

We start with some new faces, like Sansa Stark Jean Grey (Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner), whose psychic abilities have apparently picked up on something very unpleasant. Then comes our introduction to Apocalypse himself (Oscar Isaac), via voiceover, setting up his "immortal god-like bad person" persona. And if that still wasn't enough to drive home what we're dealing with, Dr. Moira MacTaggert calls on her superpower of exposition to lay out the stakes with utmost precision. Apocalypse was the world's first mutant, he has bad intentions, and he generally travels with a crew. In this case, that crew consists of super-henchmen Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), and Angel (Ben Hardy).

From there, it's a series of quick shots of mutants doing mutant things, of Apocalypse yelling his evil little heart out, and the kind of mass destruction you'd expect from a big-budget action tentpole feature. With X-Men: Days of Future Past, Singer resurrected a beleaguered franchise and gave it new life. Based on this trailer, the signs are promising that Apocalypse retains that vitality, and gives it a canvas of Biblical proportions.

Pause at: 1:53 for Angel (Archangel, by this point?) tossing metal feathers like knives. 1:58 for Isaac giving his best "Night's King at Hardhome" impression. 2:21 for our first look at iconically bald Professor X.
