MTN and Springboks part ways after a golden era. What is next for SA’s biggest brand.

The Springboks, reigning world champions and record four-time Rugby World Cup winners, have closed a chapter with MTN after a highly successful partnership spanning eight years. Under MTN’s sponsorship, the Boks secured two historic World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, cementing their legacy in world rugby.

MTN SA CEO Charles Molapisi reflected on the ground breaking partnership, emphasizing the company’s deep commitment beyond just branding.

“This has been the most awe-inspiring and rewarding partnership for MTN after coming in as lead sponsors during a more difficult period for rugby in 2017 after the Boks had not fared as well after last winning the World Cup in 2007,” Molapisi stated, as quoted by Springboks Rugby.

MTN’s involvement transcended sponsorship; it aimed to return rugby to the people, reinforce transformation, and spread the spirit of Ubuntu. By investing in the game’s growth from major stadiums to small towns and rural areas. MTN played a critical role in revitalising the sport.

“We demonstrated leadership and commitment to SA sport and could not be happier with the results,” Molapisi added.

A Golden Era of Success for South African Rugby

Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, expressed immense gratitude for MTN’s unwavering support.

“If you remember, we put out a call to corporate South Africa to partner with us at a challenging time for rugby in this country. And MTN answered that call, loud and clearly. Together, we have enjoyed what will, in time, I’m sure, be regarded as a golden age for the sport in this country.”

The partnership’s impact went beyond victories on the field. MTN’s support helped raise the global profile of SA Rugby while ensuring long-term sustainability. The Springboks twice visited MTN’s offices as newly crowned world champions, showcasing the partnership’s significance in South African sports history.

Grassroots Development and Fan Engagement

MTN didn’t just focus on the professional game—it made a lasting contribution to grassroots rugby. With an investment of R30 million into youth and community rugby programs. MTN played a vital role in developing the next generation of South African rugby stars.

Beyond financial backing, MTN revolutionized fan engagement through initiatives like Bok Squad. The official Springbok supporters’ club, and Bozza, which brought supporters closer to their team than ever before.

Molapisi recognized the passionate fanbase that fueled the Springboks’ global success:

“We could not have had this success without the fans, and I would like to thank every one of the Bok fans from across the country. From the young children in Dutywa running through the streets to support their team to the parents and families in big cities and small villages. And for their unbelievable passion and support.”

What’s Next for MTN and South African Rugby?

As MTN evolves its sponsorship strategy, the company aims to explore new opportunities that will uplift even more athletes across South Africa. While stepping away from rugby, MTN will continue its investment in football through the MTN8 sponsorship.

“We remain proud wearers of the Bok jersey. Rugby’s success shows the impact sport can have in uniting our nation, inspiring its people, and giving hope to millions,” Molapisi concluded.

With SA Rugby continuing to build on this legacy and new sponsorship opportunities on the horizon. South African rugby remains on a trajectory for even greater success in the years to come.
