Kaizer Chiefs centre-back Thatayaone Ditlhokwe has been signed by the Libyan giants Al-Ittihad for a fee reported at R15 million.
The 26-year-old Botswana international joined Amakhosi in 2023 but struggled to break into the first team. With Nasreddine Nabi taking over last year and signing four new defenders, it looked as if TT’s days with the Phefeni Glamour Boys were numbered but Miguel Inacio’s suspension saw the defender making his first appearance of the season late last year.
Ditlhokwe impressed Nabi and he was switched to left-back again excelling in the role. His R15 million move away from Kaizer Chiefs comes as a surprise given how well he was playing.
The club’s sporting director Kaizer Motaing Jnr said it was not an easy decision to sell the Botswana international.
“It was not an easy decision for us when Al-Ittihad approached us regarding TT,” Motaung Jr said.
“We engaged the player and during our discussions, he expressed his desire to move to Libya for further experience and opportunities. As a club, we didn’t want to impede his progress, and we appreciate his professionalism and discipline.
TT leaves Kaizer Chiefs for R15 million
“Although we will miss him, we believe this is a fantastic opportunity for him, and we would like to thank him for his dedicated service to Chiefs and wish him the best of luck in his new venture.” he added.
Amakhosi only have Given Msimango as a backup centre-back. A player who will benefit the most is none other than ex-Golden Arrows star Bradley Cross. The young left-back lost his starting place following his injury and has found it difficult to get his place back given TT’s form.
Ditlhokwe’s R15 million departure will assure the young Kaizer Chiefs game time.
Did Chiefs make the right decision to sell Ditlhokwe?
