Kaizer Chiefs’ long-awaited transfer target could happen soon
Chiefs long-awaited move could finally happen in July 2025, with the expiration of his sell-on clause and their need aligning perfectly.

Kaizer Chiefs’ long-awaited transfer target could happen soon, according to FARPost.
Chiefs’ attempts to sign Fawaaz Basadien have hit roadblocks in the last two transfer windows. However, several factors point toward a strong possibility of the talented Stellenbosch FC fullback finally making the move to Amakhosi in July 2025.
Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, has always been an admirer of Basadien’s skills. The fullback’s impressive performances have caught Nabi’s eye, making him a priority target for the Soweto giants.
During the last preseason transfer window, Nabi struggled to secure his primary target, Anderson Cruz, and had hoped to land Basadien as a backup option. However, Stellenbosch FC set a high asking price, which discouraged Chiefs from pushing forward with the transfer.
Why transfer to Chiefs could happen in July 2025
Despite signing a new deal with Stellies that improved his contract and granted the club more negotiating power, Basadien’s situation has evolved. The 28-year-old fullback reportedly desires a return to Gauteng, having made the move to Cape Town after leaving the now-defunct Moroka Swallows.
Now, with Chiefs desperately in need of a left-back, Basadien’s transfer is more likely than ever.
Chiefs’ struggle to find a reliable left-back has been evident. Thatayaone Ditlhokwe temporarily filled the void after Bradley Cross faced difficulties in the role. However, Ditlhokwe’s recent move to Al Ittihad in Libya has left Chiefs searching for a permanent solution. Nabi has made it clear that the team needs a dedicated left-back.
“We feel that, for example, we should have had a left-back that is a specialist in his position. The one who plays there – even though he plays amazingly well – is someone who was there first and it was a case of, ‘Let’s try him to see how he does,’” Nabi said.
Basadien could be the answer to this pressing issue.
Basadien’s journey to Stellenbosch
Fawaaz Basadien’s career trajectory shows his growth and consistency. After modest stints with clubs like Milano United, Cape Town City FC, Ubuntu Cape Town, and Steenberg United, Basadien joined Swallows in 2020. He made an immediate impact, debuting in the 2020/21 season and helping Swallows survive the playoffs.
In 2021, he moved to Stellenbosch FC on an initial two-year contract, where his performances continued to shine. With a 30% sell-on clause attached to his transfer from Swallows, Basadien’s future move could yield a significant payout for his former club.
The key to Basadien’s potential move lies in the expiration of the 30% sell-on clause in June 2025. If Stellenbosch sells Basadien before this date, Swallows—though defunct—still stands to benefit from the clause, sharing a percentage of the transfer fee. After June 2025, Stellenbosch will keep all the proceeds from any potential transfer, making it a more lucrative deal for the club.
The timing suggests that Stellenbosch could be more inclined to sell Basadien after the expiration of the clause, which aligns perfectly with Chiefs’ need for a left-back.
Mdaka: Likely replacement for Basadien at Stellies
Stellenbosch FC has already started preparing for life without Basadien. Omega Mdaka, a graduate of the Chiefs Academy, has stepped up, making 14 appearances for Stellies, eight of which were as a starter. He looks poised to replace Basadien, should he leave the club, with Chiefs hoping to finalize the deal.
Basadien has become a key figure for Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker. He helped the team secure the Carling Cup and reach the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in the club’s history. His excellent performances have also earned him a regular spot in the Bafana Bafana squad, further increasing his value.
