Mabasa on the brink of sensational Orlando Pirates record
The country’s leading goal-getter.
After a slow start with Orlando Pirates, Tshegofatso Mabasa has come into his own, amassing 40 goals in 112 appearances.
Mabasa eyes Orlando Pirates history
Now equal with Lesley Manyathela and Phumlani Mkhize in terms of goals scored for the club, Mabasa is now eyeing out Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi’s impressive tally of 52. With Pirates still challenging on three fronts, the prolific 28-year-old will fancy his chances of eclipsing that number in the current campaign. Loan spells away at Royal AM, Sekhukhune and Swallows helped the marksman come into his own as a goal-scorer.
Mabasa is inspired by Tso Vilakazi
Betway Premiership Golden Boot holder Tshegofatso Mabasa has Tso Vilakazi’s goal tally in his crosshairs and is desperate to go down in the record books.
“Tso’s record of 52 goals for the Buccaneers,” said Mabasa.
“It is something that my teammates have made me aware of, it’s not something that I’ve looked at personally, but the guys have encouraged me and motivated me to go through with this, and stay focused,
“It’s up to me to bury every chance that comes my way and claim that record because they believe that I am one of the best strikers this country has ever seen and they support me a lot. So it’s something that I want to achieve come the end of this season.”
Bucs face Sundowns next
Orlando Pirates face the biggest test of their season in the league when they face champions Mamelodi Sundowns. The Buccaneers beat Sekhukhune 2-1 on Wednesday with goals from Deon Hotto and Makhehlene Makhaula, assisted by Hotto. Former Sea Robber Linda Mntambo scored the consolation for the hosts. Sundowns claimed a routine 3-0 win away to SuperSport with goals from Jayden Adams and a Tashreeq Matthews brace. Pirates are in great form having beaten Kaizer Chiefs and Babina Noko within three days.
Sundowns host Pirates on Saturday, 08 February with kickoff at 15:30. It’s undoubtedly the biggest game of the season so far. Pirates trail the champions by six points but have a game in hand.
If Mabasa eclipses Vilakazi’s tally, where does he stand in terms of potential Pirates legends?
