Orlando Pirates must act now to keep title hopes alive!
After several years of hurt, Orlando Pirates have a chance to reestablish themselves as South Africa’s best club.
Orlando Pirates have been surprisingly quiet in the January transfer window amid a Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs spending spree.
The Buccaneers, who sit second on the log, haven’t had as good of a chance to lift the title since letting it slip in 2019, falling short by two agonising points.
Miguel Cardoso’s side has been a man against boys in recent years, clearing second-placed Pirates by 23 points last season, and 16 the year before – but now, with Relehobile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota at the helm, Orlando Pirates look ready to ruffle some Brazilian feathers.
However, with two losses in their last five games, cracks are beginning to appear – perhaps some signings can get them back on track?
No player’s to speak off
Jose Riveiro’s side lies three points behind Sundowns but risks falling further behind if they fail to bring in more firepower before the summer window closes.
Alongside their lack of transfer activity, another element that should raise alarm bells is the uncertainty surrounding Monnapule Saleng and Patrick Maswanganyi—two stars who are linked with exits.
Orlando Pirates have managed well without Saleng, but a Maswanganyi exit could spell the end of their title chances.
If the Buccaneer’s management wants to be serious contenders for the PSL, they must invest now; otherwise, they risk falling to the wayside against a rampant Sundowns side that has recently added Jayden Adams and Argentine defender Lucas Suárez to its roster.
Can Orlando Pirates win the league with their current crop of players?
