Orlando Pirates were humbled by Mamelodi Sundowns, who are in hot pursuit of their eighth successive league title.

The Buccaneers could not keep the PSL’s most winningest team at bay, losing 4-1 as Lucas Ribeiro Costa ran rampant, scoring a brace to keep the visitors out of contention.

Jose Riveiro suffered two injury blows in the game prior – Thabiso Sesane and Thalente Mbatha – against Sekhukhune United, who Tapelo Xoki and Makhehlene Makhauli replaced; however, both were unable to fill their voids.

Sesane news

Sesane ruptured his tendon and will require surgery, supposedly sidelining him until the end of the season:

“Thabiso Sesane has been ruled out after suffering a ruptured tendon during Pirates’ hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United midweek. The injury, which occurred early in the match, has left the young defender in need of surgery.”

Mbatha news

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates midfielder Mbatha is expected to make a speedy return:

“Meanwhile, Mbatha, the dynamic midfielder and Bafana Bafana international has also been sidelined after failing a late fitness test. Mbatha picked up his injury during the same match against Sekhukhune, following a collision with an opposition player as he attempted to shoot at goal.

“The Bucs medical team has been working tirelessly to get Mbatha back on the pitch, but the decision has been made to prioritise his recovery. He will now focus on rehabilitation in the coming days, with hopes of a swift return to action.”

Two PSL wingers on Orlando Pirates radar

To the dismay of fans, Orlando Pirates failed to make any signings during the January transfer window, failing to land Polokwane pair Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi.

The Soweto giants hope to land talent in the offseason, namely Cape Town City youngster Jaedin Rhodes and AmaZulu FC midfielder Tshepang Moremi.
