‘Playing for Kaizer Chiefs is not easy’ – Amakhosi reborn star breaks down to tears
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou was in tears after he was awarded Man of the Match against Free Agents FC.
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has reflected on his journey which saw him return to the first team.
The emotional 26-year-old was awarded Man of the Match folllowing his performance against Free Agents this past weekend. Amakhosi eased past the ABC Motsepe League side 4-0 in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.
“It’s a bit emotional for me. It has been a really hard journey for me because It’s not easy to be out of football for nine months,” Matlou told SuperSport TV after the match.

“So I am grateful to my medical team and to the coach for believing in me. It wasn’t easy for me, but I thank God that he gave me strength and here I am today playing.”
“I also want to say thanks to my teammates for always helping me to be the George that I know. The journey hasn’t been easy for me because playing for Kaizer Chiefs is not easy,” he added.
“Everyone wants to play for Chiefs but no one knows how it is to be here, so I’m privileged enough and honoured to wear the Kaizer Chiefs jersey.”
The Amakhosi midfielder missed much of the season through injury and at one point, it looked certain he would be released. Through hard work and determination, Matlou has forced his way back into Nasreddine Nabi’s squad.
Kaizer Chiefs are in action this weekend against rivals Orlando Pirates in the first Soweto Derby of the season.
