Thabo Cele surprises fans by passing Man of the Match award to Kaizer Chiefs star.
In a stunning display of humility and team spirit, Cele, the 28-year-old Chiefs midfielder, chose to give away his award to his teammate, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, after their dominant 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday night. This remarkable gesture came after Cele was named the best player of the match, despite the fact that he felt Ngcobo’s performance deserved the honour even more in the Nedbank Cup.
Cele’s impressive contribution to Chiefs
Since joining Kaizer Chiefs in January from Russian club Fakel Voronezh, Thabo Cele has been making waves with his performances in the defensive midfield role. The KwaMashu-born talent has quickly established himself as a key figure for Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi, playing an essential part in the team’s midfield structure.
In Saturday’s game, Cele teamed up with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in the heart of midfield, with Gaston Sirino playing further forward in the No. 10 role. The trio worked seamlessly to help Kaizer Chiefs secure the victory. With goals from Miguel Inacio, Pule Mmodi, and Mfundo Vilakazi.
Unselfish gesture highlights Ngcobo’s performance
Despite his own standout performance, Cele was not focused on personal accolades. After the match, he made a touching move by handing over his Man of the Match award to Ngcobo. Who was playing in his first start of the season. The midfielder’s performance during the Nedbank Cup quarter-final was exceptional. As he played an unfamiliar 6 role and delivered a stellar display.
A teammate who witnessed the gesture explained. “Cele headed over to Mshini after the post-match interview and gave him his Man of the Match award. He felt Mshini was extraordinary and more deserving of the award. He’s been a leader in the dressing room despite being here for a few weeks.”
Ngcobo’s rising star shines in midfield
Ngcobo’s talent has long been recognised by coach Nasreddine Nabi. Who praised Ncgobo as “a very technical player and very smart,” as quoted by FARPost. However, Nabi also encouraged him to develop a more physical side to his game. Particularly when playing in the midfield, where space is limited, and opponents close in quickly.
The performance against Stellenbosch proved that Ngcobo is rapidly improving. He formed a strong partnership with Cele, showcasing excellent chemistry and balance in the midfield.
As the season progresses, Thabo Cele and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo are becoming an increasingly formidable duo in Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield. Their understanding on the field and mutual respect off the field highlight the unity and teamwork at the core of this Amakhosi squad.
With such strong camaraderie and skill in the heart of midfield. Chiefs fans can look forward to even more exciting performances from both players as the club strives for glory this season.
