This weekend, 1 February, the iconic rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will be reignited once again for the 107th league match between the two Soweto giants.
As expected, the clash at FNB Stadium is already sold out, a testament to its enduring importance, with kick off set for 15:30.
For those who won’t be there in person, the match will be broadcast on SuperSport PSL Channel 202 on DStv and SABC 1. Build up will be from around 14:00.
It’s worth remembering that Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi returns to the sidelines after a two-match suspension, with this morale boost also coming in a week where Amakhosi announced three new recruits in Glody Lilepo, Tashreeq Morris and Thabo Cele.
Meanwhile, Pirates will be desperate to continue applying pressure on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who are only six points ahead (having also played an extra game).
Chiefs and Pirates have a storied history
The roots of this fierce rivalry trace back to 1970, the year the two Soweto giants first clashed. Since Kaizer Chiefs’ inception 55 years ago, this fixture has evolved into a fan-fueled spectacle, bringing communities together and generating passionate debates.
Over the previous 106 league meetings, Chiefs hold the upper hand, boasting 45 victories compared to Pirates’ 25. The intensity of their encounters is further highlighted by 36 drawn matches.
Looking beyond league meetings, when including cup encounters, the teams have fought it out a total of 180 times, with Kaizer Chiefs’ 74 victories dominating historically over Pirates’ 47, with 54 draws and five abandonments, owing to various circumstance.
