If you’re in sunny Durban during this summer and festive season, and you’re looking for a fun day out, the surrounding KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) region has some of the most beautiful waterfalls just a short drive away.

From scenic cascades in lush valleys to towering falls in tranquil reserves, each spot offers an incredible opportunity to connect with nature. Here are four beautiful waterfalls within two hours of Durban, perfect for a refreshing day trip during the summer…

1. Paradise Valley Waterfall

Where: Paradise Valley Nature Reserve, Pinetown (about 20 minutes from Durban)

Though smaller than some other falls on this list, the Paradise Valley waterfall is easy to access and surrounded by well-maintained forest trails. It’s an ideal option for a quick escape from the city or a family outing.

2. Karkloof Falls

Where: Karkloof Nature Reserve, near Howick (around 1.5 hours from Durban)

Karkloof Falls, at 105 meters high, offers an impressive sight amidst a lush forest. Known for its tranquility, this spot is perfect for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle for a few hours of solitude and natural beauty.

3. Shongweni Falls/Wekeweke Falls

Where: Shongweni Nature Reserve (about 45 minutes from Durban)

Shongweni Falls, also known as Kirk Falls or Wekeweke Falls, tumbles down a rocky cliff surrounded by indigenous forests, creating a stunning natural scene. The falls are part of the Shongweni Nature Reserve, which is well-known for its pristine environment and rich biodiversity.

4. Howick Falls
